Business Unit Description State & Community Engagement (SCE) is part of Community, State and National Affairs (CSN). The SCE team includes: 53 states and territories across 6 regions with regional management, the Office of Volunteer Engagement, the Office of Community Engagement (including the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA): AARP's Educator Community), and the Legal Counsel for the Elderly (LCE). SCE Vision: -State & Community Engagement (SCE) enables AARP to be a nationwide organization, which strengthens our capacity to carry out our mission. -SCE brings AARP closer to our members, people 50, and their families, which allows us to listen - and respond - to their wants and needs that align with our mission. -We drive an impact agenda, deepen relationships with key audiences & stakeholders, and build AARP's relevance at the community and state levels. Summary Contributes to the achievement of strategic priorities by providing professional level coordination for NJ advocacy and outreach work in assigned region; including: local volunteer recruitment, training, engagement and mobilization. Coordinates initiatives and projects in assigned region, creates project-related materials, and determines resources necessary to complete projects. Develops events, recruits and works in partnership with a team of volunteers and chapters in assigned region. Manages and owns relationships with chapter leadership statewide. Makes presentations, keeps records, prepares reports. Incumbents(s) in this position may perform all or a significant combination of the tasks described below depending on operational requirements, assigned location, and individual areas of expertise. Responsibilities 1. Recruits, on-boards and trains volunteers in assigned NJ region on priority issues, strategies, tactics, policies and state specific political and communications processes. Ensures that proper resources and trainings are available to volunteers, including issue material, talking points, updates and briefing materials. Works to fully engage volunteers and active chapters in community outreach, communications and advocacy activities as they relate to the state plan. Conducts volunteer recognition activities and events. 2. Works with AARP active and involved chapters statewide to meaningfully engage these groups in AARP strategic priorities. 3. Coordinates building a volunteer infrastructure that has a real and sustained impact in assigned region. 4. Demonstrates a high level of competence with oral and written communication - including in community, partner, and public facing outreach vehicles, social media, and member and volunteer communications. 5. Develops and implements projects/events/activities in assigned NJ region that advance AARP's strategic priorities. Manages projects/events/activities within an assigned budget. Works closely with staff from the national office as well as community partners to achieve a successful project, event, or activity outcome. 6. Works to engage members, volunteers, and community partners in grassroots, community outreach and policy maker relationship activities in assigned region and in support of the AARP advocacy state plan. 7. Demonstrates AARP Values and Leadership behaviors in all interactions. Requirements Completion of a Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public administration, business, community organization/development, political science, public policy or related discipline, and 3 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position. Demonstrates an understanding of the state's political and human services environment.
