Stantec's freshwater aquatic ecology work in Atlantic Canada spans
from the forests of New Brunswick to the barrens of Newfoundland
and Labrador, with projects focusing on mining, power and
transportation. Our team includes nationally recognized experts in
freshwater and marine ecology and aquatic toxicology. A role with

Your Opportunity
Stantec has an opportunity for an Intermediate Aquatic Biologist to
join our aquatics team. The position is open in our Fredericton,
New Brunswick or St John's NL locations, although other Atlantic
Canadian locations may be considered.
The ideal candidate should have both field program execution and
reporting experience. Field experience should include sampling a
wide range of freshwater organisms and aquatic habitats in Canada.
Experience should also include implementing aquatic studies and/or
monitoring programs as well as experience with data
analysis/interpretation and reporting. Experience with research,
mining projects, environmental impact assessment, permitting,
marine ecosystems, hydrology and/or aquatic toxicology would be
considered an asset.
The successful candidate will join our team as an Aquatic Biologist
with a focus on supporting environmental effects monitoring studies
and fisheries related permitting. As an Aquatic Biologist, you will
conduct exciting work with multi-disciplinary teams on varied
projects across Atlantic Canada.
Your Key Responsibilities
Lead and support aquatic field work in accordance with Stantec's
health and safety and quality management systems. Work will include
fish, fish habitat, benthic invertebrate, and/or water and sediment
quality surveys for a wide variety of projects in accordance with
provincial and federal guidance
Manage and interpret biological and/or chemical data
Perform statistical analyses for fish, fish tissue, benthic
invertebrate, water quality, and sediment quality data to detect
spatial and/or temporal trends, significant differences, and/or
guideline exceedances
Prepare various permit applications (e.g., Fisheries Act Request
for Reviews or Authorization applications)
Write technical reports
Write and/or support development of proposals and study designs
Actively participate in Stantec's Health, Safety, Security, and
Environment Program to promote a strong health and safety culture
at work and at home
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Experience
Understanding of the ecology of lakes and rivers
Supporting field programs and leading field crews
Experience capturing fish using a variety of fish capture methods
(i.e., gill nets, fyke nets, minnow traps, electrofishing) in a
variety of habitats
Adaptable, able to solve problems in the field and work in a
fast-paced environment
Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 20 kg (i.e.,
carrying field equipment and samples)
Experience working in and driving boats
Willingness to travel for work
Working in remote locations
Analyzing/interpretating biological and chemical data
Statistical experience and experience using statistical software
(e.g., Excel, Systat, and/or R) is considered an important
asset
Writing clear, concise and accurate technical reports
Supporting mentorship and field training of junior staff
Strong interpersonal and social skills
Detail oriented, excellent time management and organizational
skills
Education and Experience
A minimum of a Bachelors degree in Science (e.g., biology,
environmental studies, or similar fields) and 3-5 years of
experience related to aquatic ecology in Canada. Relevant
consulting experience or a Master's degree in Science would be
considered an asset.
Field work includes exposure to the elements, including inclement
weather, working on or near water and working in remote locations.
Typical office environment involves working with computers and
remaining relatively sedentary. Stantec offers a flexible work
arrangement for desk-based tasks, combining home-based and/or
office-based time.
