Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Coding Specialist in the Department of Medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.Coding Specialist functions as a medical coder for the Department of Medicine for multiple major subspecialties. Responsible for delivering accurate and consistent abstracting, coding, and interpreting for facility billing. Use coding knowledge to abstract, analyze and record data from medical records and provides support to areas related to documentation and coding. Maintains compliance with both external regulatory and accreditation requirements, and with State and Federal regulations. Utilizes the physician query process to obtain/validate missing information and/or discrepancies for clarification of documentation for accurate code assignment.Among the key duties of this position are the following: Abstracts from patient charts and medical record documents all billable services for the Department of Medicine. Translates billable charges into ICD -10-CM, CPT -4, E codes and modifiers. Compares and reviews superbills, both manually and system generated, to clinical documentation to ensure that all charges for procedures and services rendered have been accurately documented and captured. Reviews billings in Cardiology Division for accuracy. Monitors claims for missing information, authorization/control numbers; follow-up on audits, missing charges and clinical documentation. Establishes and enforces the Department's coding strategy. Delivers accurate and consistent medical coding updates and bi-weekly reconciliation reports and findings to the Department's Administrators. Works with physicians and medical record staff to ensure that correct diagnosis/procedures are reported to third party insurance carriers; processes rejections to correct any billing errors and resubmitted claims to third party insurance carriers. Provides education and training to physicians and staff concerning coding in accordance with National Correct Coding Initiative ( NCCI ) to resolve routine billing errors, inquiries and problems. Conducts frequent training sessions for and maintains communications regularly with physicians and staff on an individual or group setting regarding medical coding rules, updates, SOPs, and federal regulations. Provides ad hoc medical coding expertise in writing to the Department Administrators in accordance with NCCI coding initiatives. Minimum Education and Experience Minimum of three (3) years (four years preferred) hands on coding and abstracting experience with multiple major physician specialties required of which one (1) year with cardiology specialty preferred.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proficiency in all aspects of E, coding guidelines and sub-specialty coding and billing guidelines at the physician professional level. CPT -4 and ICD -9-CM/ ICD -10 CM coding and abstracting experience for a physician office, hospital or insurance carrier multi - specialty areas. Knowledgeable of CMS , Medicaid, and third party payer coding, billing, and compliance regulations. Computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel. Effective oral and written communication skills.
